The International Baccalaureate Program at the Bahrain School
International Baccalaureate Program IB Courses currently offered at Bahrain School are:
Theory of Knowledge (Assessed via a 1500 word essay and an oral presentation, made with a partner)
Group 1: English
Group 2: French, Spanish, and Arabic at both Higher and Standard Levels and AB Initio; German
Group 3: Economics, European History, ITGS (SL only)
Group 4: Physics, Biology, Chemistry
Group 5: Mathematics
Group 6: Visual Arts, Theatre Arts
All subjects are available at both Higher and Standard Levels unless specified as above.
Other subjects currently under consideration: Business Studies, Computer Studies
Please note that the first year of several of our IB Higher courses are named on our schedule as, for example, AP Calculus, AP Microeconomics. This is because, in some subjects, there is enough congruence between the IB and AP curriculums for us to be able to prepare students adequately to take the AP test at the end of the first year of study and then to continue with the remainder of the IB syllabus in the second year.
The AP test is provided at no cost to the students thus enrolled.
CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) Students are provided with a CAS booklet in which they keep a record of their activities. The Bahrain School provides a CAS Coordinator who assists and advises students in the successful completion of the 150 hours of CAS activities required by IBO.
Extended Essay All IB teachers at the Bahrain School are willing to act as supervisors in their subject area to assist students to complete this major (4000 word) project.
Preparation for taking IB Diploma or Certificate subjects:
At the Bahrain School, while we do not apply “gate-keeping,” we do advise that a student who will attempt the full IB Diploma should be a “student across the board.” For Certificate entry, naturally we expect the student to be at least a B student in the particular subject taken.
Dual Diploma : A number of students attempt to complete the requirements for both the IB Diploma and the American High School Diploma. In the view of the IB Coordinator, only the “most gifted” students, academically, should attempt this. Now that the graduation requirements for the American High School Diploma have been raised to twenty-six credits, it is becoming very difficult for a student merely to find the time available to complete all the required studies. In fact, the only way to satisfy all requirements is to take US History in the 10 th Grade. See Ms. O'Hanrahan at the end of 9 th Grade to request this.
The IB Coordinator at the Bahrain School is Mr. Trevor Burt. He is delighted to be available whenever possible to advise students and parents on any aspect of the IB Programme at the Bahrain School. Mr. Burt's contact details are: office direct: 17719810, Cell phone: 39406807, Fax: 17725714, or 17826796, Email: trevor.burt@eu.dodea.edu
